My first observation of the story, "Touching Spirit Bear" by Ben Mikaelsen, is when Cole is mauled by the spirit bear and is crushed and laying on the ground and looking around and sees baby sparrows in a tree. The next morning after a severe thunderstorm Cole finds the baby sparrow's tree knocked over, and all of the baby sparrows dead. He thought that the baby sparrows should have been alive and him dead. That showed me that he could change, and had begun to start changing.
My second observation of the book is Cole's about parents. They should have been more active in his life. Instead of being in his life and giving him support, they drank beer and got drunk and neglected Cole physically and emotionally. This was a very bad example for Cole; like they say the "apple doesn't fall to far from the tree". What I learned from this was that problems at home probably ignited Cole's anger and violence.
My last observation of the book, "Touching Spirit Bear", is when Cole is laying on the ground after being mauled, he is disabled and unable to move therefore, he can't get up and walk back to camp when he is hungry. So in order to keep himself alive he eats a variety of nasty things like grass, live bugs, rain water and, even a live mouse! From this I think Cole learned to be grateful for his food and what I learned from this is to not take for granted the simple things you have.

Questions
- If you were in Cole's situation, and were being physically abused do you think it would make you a more violent person?
If I were being physically abused I don't think I would become more violent because I am a very gentle and kind person and couldn't think of hurting anyone else the way I was being hurt.
If you were being physically abused, would you have the courage to tell?
If you were being physically abused, would you have the courage to tell?
Do you think it was fate that the spirit bear happened to show up when Cole was mad, and practically shattered his bones, disabling him in the same way he brutally beat Peter?
If Cole never came in contact with the spirit bear, do you think he would have changed?
- If you were Cole would you have chose circle justice or jail?
If Cole would have gone to jail instead of circle justice, do you think he would have found the help and changes he need in a jail system or would it have just fueled his violence and negative behavior?

Clarfication
A passage I think is important in the story "Touching Spirit Bear" is, the passage where Cole had been mauled by a bear, which ended up helping him be more successful. By this I mean, after he was mauled, he saw things in a different way like, the spirit bear was just defending himself; and about the baby sparrows, Cole thought he should have been the one to die not them.
Also something else that showed a step towards success for Cole was when is when he decided to sell all of his belongings that were needed to afford food and supplies. Cole had to sell his sports gear, dirt bike, snowmobile, and lots of other things to stay on the island to finish his sentence. He didn't have to sell his things, he could have just chosen to go to jail, but he had something he wanted to prove to everyone; that he could change.
The last passage I thought would affect Cole's success was the fact that he beat Peter and had to be sentenced to a place to serve time for committing a criminal and violent act. Because Cole has a criminal record, it will be hard for him to find a job, get a car, or basically anything. All of these things have to do with Cole being successful because, it is teaching him to be a more responsible, respectful, and gentle person.
